Adding a new addition to your family is a life altering event worthy of a party, whether you are the natural birth parents or you are adopting a child. Throwing a baby or older child shower for the new parents is a thoughtful way to show that you share in the joy of their new addition.
Adoption showers are similar to regular baby showers with a few important differences. Timing of the shower is more important than ever. Do not host a shower until the adoption is finalized and there is no chance that the parents-to-be could be heartbroken by a failed adoption. On the other hand, if the parents are traveling to another country to bring home their child, hosting the shower before they leave can help them to have their new child’s space ready for them when they get home. Another consideration is the age of the child to be adopted. Hosting a shower for older children is a thoughtful way to help out the new parents with the expense of a new child.
Similar to regular baby showers, pick a theme for your party and decorate lavishly. If the child is coming from a foreign culture, your theme could involve the child’s original heritage. Party games will depend on the age of the child to be adopted. Diapering a toy doll doesn’t work if the adopted child is 10 years old! However, word games based on the child’s name or heritage would be fine. Consider a couples shower to include the dad-to-be in the celebration. Throwing a shower for an adoption is a lovely way to show your family and friends that you support their decision and love the new addition to the family.
