A new twist on the traditional baby shower is throwing a couples baby shower to include both the father and mother. A new baby is a family event, and dads-to-be will appreciate being including in the festivities as long as the shower is geared toward couples and not just ladies.
Hosting a couples shower does change the dynamics of the party, of course. Get a list of couples from the parents-to-be and make sure the invitations specify that couples are invited. Instead of calling it a baby shower which is more geared toward women, call it a welcome party for the baby. Try to stay away from “cute” when planning the theme and decorations. A more man friendly theme, such as a sports or hobbies such as fishing or Harleys will make the men in the group feel more welcome and relaxed. Dads enjoy sharing their interests and hobbies with their child regardless of whether the child is a daughter or a son.
Instead of finger sandwiches and tea, serve a more substantial meal, such as a BBQ or a buffet. Normally the food is the main focus at a couples baby shower. Depending on the personalities of the men at the party, you can have shower games or skip them. If you choose a sports theme, you could hold the party during a special game or race and open presents when the event is over. Have the couple sit together and open presents. Traditional baby presents are important, but having a present or two geared toward the dad-to-be is a thoughtful way to include him in the fun.
