Diaper Cakes

A diaper cake is a three layer cake make entirely out of diapers, blankets, bottles, and other toys and gifts for the new baby.  It is given as a gift at a baby shower.  A diaper cake can be used as the center piece at the party.  Depending on how many tiers you want will determine how many diapers you will need.  If you make a three tier cake you will generally need about fifty newborn diapers.  Some small gifts you can include on your cake are pacifiers, rattles, hair brush, bibs, teething rings, socks, shoes, and little books.  Great toppers for your cake are any plush stuffed animal or bottles.

To make a diaper cake you start with the top tier.  Roll a diaper up starting at the open end.  Then wrap a ribbon around it to keep it from unrolling.  Using the same ribbon continue to roll up the diapers and wrapping them in the ribbon.  Use about eight diapers for the top tier.  Repeat the first step adding about fifteen diapers to the second tier.  For the base repeat the second step adding about thirty diapers to the tier.  Now cut a circle out of some cardboard big enough to hold your cake on.  You can cover the cardboard with some decorative paper.  Place the base on the cardboard.  To add gifts to each layer simply remove one or two diapers from each tier and replace it with your item of choice.  Now that all the gifts are in place, put the remaining two layers on top of the base.  You can tie a large ribbon around each tier to cover the ribbon connecting the diapers.  To make sure your cake does not fall over place one or two wooden dowels through the base layer and then carefully stacking the other two layers on top of it.  Be careful not to puncture the diapers as you slide the dowels through the cake.  And finally you can wrap the cake in cellophane or netting tying the top closed.
