It's All In a Diaper!

If you are giving a shower, or just want to arrive with a gift that will be the talk of the party, then take a cake -  a diaper cake!

Diaper cakes have been around for a while, but seem to appear mostly online.  There are a few websites that specialize in these unique, yet practical cakes.  A smaller “cupcake” gift might consist of a dozen diapers, a washcloth, bib, and a small toy displayed or hidden within the arrangement.  The larger the cake, the more items it will have in it.  Online orders can be done by choosing from their selections, or by customizing what you would like in the cake for extra gift items.  These diaper confections range in price from just under $20 to well over $100.

These cakes are very time consuming to make, as each diaper is individually rolled, banded, and stacked on end.  It takes 7-12 diapers to form a circle large enough for the top tier of a cake.  Increasing to the next size layer can take as many as 30 diapers.  It just depends on the size you want to create.  Before stacking the cake layers, insert a few small gift items between the diapers in each layer.  Small gift ideas could include a pacifier, baby spoons, washcloths, rash ointment, or a narrow rattle.  Stack your tiers and hold them in place by inserting a couple of dowels down through the layers.  Wrap a wide ribbon around the outside of each layer to cover the rubber bands that hold the diapers in a circle.  Place a toy or bottle in the center of top layer to finish your masterpiece!
