Diaper Cakes

Do not plan to serve a diaper cake with coffee or tea at your next baby shower.  Diaper cakes are not edible treats, but rather a fun and visually appealing gift of usable baby items for the mother-to-be.  Starting with diapers as the “cake” layers, diaper cakes can be any size and decorated for any theme with an unlimited variety of baby items.

There are many websites on the internet where you order a diaper cake and have it decorated in many different ways.  A cheaper and fun alternative is to make your own diaper cake.  The basic recipe is diapers and embellishments.  For a basic one layer cake, roll 10-15 diapers (either disposable or cloth) and place them tightly together in a circle and secure with ribbon around the entire circumference.  For a tiered cake, use more diapers on the bottom and smaller circles in each tier.  Place on a round cardboard cake platter, and decorate your diaper cake with ribbons, bibs, toys, flowers, or anything else you want to give the mother-to-be.  Try to avoid using tape to secure the diapers as removing the tape could rip the diapers making them unusable.  The cakes can be gender specific in terms of colors and embellishments, or just general baby cakes.  You can tailor the cake to the mother’s special interests, such as Disney or a sports theme.  You can make two one tiered cakes for twins, or have all the guests chip in for a multi-tiered diaper cake extravaganza!

Diapers are one of the best gifts anyone can give an expectant mother.  Arrange them in a fun and attractive diaper cake and your gift is sure to be the hit of the baby shower!
